9-10 All-State Violin Audition Excerpt
The Left Hand
At measure 25 keep your hand agile. Let your fingers do the least movement.
Keep your hand relaxed.
Be light on the shifts.
Right Hand
At measure 28, for the sfp play closer to the bridge then for the piano move the bow closer to the fingerboard.
At measure 42 play the staccato notes at the balance point of your bow. Do not lift up the bow too high off the string. Keep the articulation crispy.
Be smart on how you want to grow the crescendo for 12 measures. Around measure 55 consider playing that measure forte.
At measure 59 you want to play the staccato quarter notes with a martelé bow stroke — make them punchy.
At measure 74 use your full bow, from fog to tip. Don’t rush the eighth notes nor not articulate them. Play them as if they have tenuto markings.
At measure 110 use your entire bow. Use the quarter notes to travel back to the frog.
Phrasing
Play the beginning very sneaky, yet intense.
Keep the intensity throughout the piece. Remember to not push you violin past its limit if not it can start squeaking.
