9-10 All-State Violin Audition Etude
The Left Hand
Keep your hand relaxed as much as possible when playing this etude. Don’t muscle through this etude.
Use pivoting fingers to help keep a secure hand shape. This will also help stabilize your intonation.
Don’t raise your fingers too high. The closer to the string your fingers are, the less effort you have to exert for your playing. Your fingers should move like pistons.
Used different rhythms to coordinate your playing.
Practice slowly and use drones!
The Right Hand
Martelé bow stroke should be played at the middle to upper half of the bow. This bow stoke should have an abrupt beginning and end to the stoke. However, make sure you let the notes ring and do not stop the sound.
Make sure you are transferring the weight of the hand correctly from the pinky to the index finger and vice versa. I like to think of the pinky as the shock absorber.
Make sure you do not tense up your arm.
Make sure you are conscious of your bow’s height compared to the string for easy string crossings.
Drop the elbow and wrist for the string crossings.
When string crossing from a high not to a low note, example measure 2, give the low note a little more bite to make it speak more and project.
Phrasing
Add dynamics to this study — it is still a piece of music.
I would not take a full ritardando, but add more commas to show a breathe, the start and ending of a new phrase.
