11-12 All-State Violin Audition Etude

The Left Hand

  1. To have a solid intonation practice this as if you were playing chords.

  2. Use at least one finger as a pivot finger to keep a consistent hand frame.

  3. Practice the shifts slowly. Practice tip: use the grace note exercise to practice the connection between the awkward shifts.

  4. Pay special attention to your hand frame. This will ensure you playing is stable.

  5. For the chords. place a little more weight and padding on the lower note to stabilize the intonation and have a fuller sound.

  6. Keep your hand relaxed

The Right Hand

  1. Use the up bow eight notes as travel bow to get back at the frog.

  2. Emphasize the chords more. This will help keep the momentum and the phrase moving.

  3. Keep the 16th notes short, so you do not end up playing at the tip.

  4. Keep the hand relaxed.

Phrasing

  1. Keep this moving. Keep it very light — not too heavy.

  2. For the 16th note figures in measure 21, 23, 35, keep them very playful.

  3. Add dynamics to make this as musical as possible.
