7-8 All-State Violin Audition Etude 2
The Left Hand
You want to make sure that your hand is relaxed at all times.
For a continuous vibrato create a goal of just vibrating the long notes and then slowly try to vibrate every note. Like always you can technically not vibrate certain notes if it is your artistic choice, but for good practice try to vibrate every note.
To have clean shifts use a guiding finger. Remember not to squeeze your thumb before you shift — let it be as relaxed as possible.
When shifting you want to release the pressure from your finger that is on the string and glide to the next note.
For intonation, use a drone.
The Right Hand
Balance the shifting hand weight from your pinky to your index finger.
If you are going to make crescendos and decrescendos, make sure they are intentional and not because you are not balancing the weight of your hand.
Play around between full bow hair and just 25-50% of bow hair. This will add different colors and help your expression.
Phrasing
Make this as singable as possible — try to sing the line yourself.
Picture where a singer would have breathe marks and when they would have a long continuous line.
Add dynamics to this etude to make it as interesting as possible. Since motifs constantly repeat, perhaps the first statement is soft and the second time is louder.
Following the natural line of the etude can help you figure out when to get louder or get softer.
