11-12 All-State Violin Audition Excerpt
The Left Hand
At the arco section, a nice arm vibrato would help create a broad sound that this piece requires.
Vibrato every note!
Keep the hand relaxed — especially in the quick sections. Tap your thumb frequently when practicing to make sure you are not locking your thumb, hand, and arm.
Practice the shifts with a guiding finger.
For the high notes, when practicing, tap to hear the pitch.
For the 16th passage keep your fingers as close to the strings as possible.
The Right Hand
Play with all bow hairs to create a nice broad sound.
Make sure you balance the shifting weight of the bow. Especially at measure 69 and 77. Feel the weight of the bow move from the pinky to the index.
At measure 65 start and stay on the string with a brush stroke. Keep the energy going even with the rests.
At letter C, decide how you want to accent the passage.
Sustain all notes fully.
Pay attention to your sting crossings
Phrasing
Keep it broad and tumultuous.
At letter B make the two sequences different — one softer the other louder.
At measure 69 and 77 get out of the way because the winds have a more important line than the violins.
